His artistic journey began with an Art and Design Foundation course at Leicester Polytechnic in 1987, after which he pursued Environmental Art at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1991.

Throughout his career, Shrigley has seamlessly blended visual art with literary and musical collaborations. Notably, he directed a music video for the band Blur in 2003 and released a collaborative album called ‘Worried Noodles’ in 2007, transforming his textual artworks into lyrics. His engagement with The Guardian as a cartoon contributor since 2005 has also been a significant aspect of his work.

Shrigley’s art often features simple, yet profound imagery accompanied by text, exploring the mundane with a sharp wit that challenges viewers' perceptions. His works range from black and white drawings to vibrant, colorful compositions, as well as interactive installations like the large ‘thumbs-up’ sculpture for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2016, encapsulating his deadpan humor.

His traveling exhibition 'Lose Your Mind', organized by the British Council from 2015 to 2018, showcased his versatility across various media, including ceramics and mixed-media sculptures. More recently, his 'Lockdown Drawings', inspired by the 2020 coronavirus lockdown, were displayed at the Stephen Friedman Gallery, reflecting his capacity to engage with contemporary issues.
